AARP Foundation Litigation (AFL)

AARP Foundation Litigation (AFL) is a unit of AARP Foundation Legal Advocacy Group that conducts high-visibility litigation to benefit members of AARP (formerly American Association of Retired Persons) and other people over age 50. Through its thirteen attorneys, AFL engages in law reform litigation on behalf of older persons and prepares amicus ("friend of the court") briefs primarily in the areas of age discrimination; pensions and other employee benefits; consumer fraud including predatory lending; health and long-term care; and access to justice. The AARP Foundation is an affiliated, 501(c)(3) nonpartisan charitable organization that administers publicly and privately funded programs, such as AARP Tax-Aide and the AARP Senior Community Service Employment Program. The Foundation is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for older Americans, promoting their independence and dignity, providing leadership on issues of importance to older persons, and improving the image of aging.

Dan Kohrman, Attorney

Daniel B. Kohrman represents workers in age & disability employment discrimination matters as a member of AARP Foundation Litigation's employment team. Dan handles both trial and appellate cases in both areas. Mr. Kohrman has filed amicus briefs on behalf of AARP in cases involving the Age Discrimination in Employment Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act, and related state and federal laws, in the 2d, 6th, 7th and 9th Circuits, in the Supreme Courts of Minnesota, Mississippi, Ohio and Texas, and, along with AARP colleagues, in the U.S. Supreme Court. Recently, Dan has worked as principal trial co-counsel in an age discrimination class action matter in federal district court in Virginia, and in a disability discrimination case in state court in Maryland. Before coming to AARP, Dan worked as a trial attorney in the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, as a Supervising Attorney with the national office of the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, and as a member of the litigation and education practice groups of the DC law firm of Hogan & Hartson. Dan served as a law clerk in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey. He graduated from Columbia Law School in 1984.

Laurie McCann, Senior Attorney

Laurie McCann has worked for AARP since 1986. She has prepared numerous amicus curiae briefs on behalf of AARP in cases before the United States Supreme Court, and federal and state courts. Her principal responsibilities include litigation and amicus curiae participation for AARP on a broad range of age discrimination in employment issues. She is the Co-Editor of the Age Discrimination chapter of the Fourth Edition of the Employment Discrimination Law treatise as well as the First, Second and Third Supplements to the Third Edition of that publication. Her publications include, The ADEA and the Eleventh Amendment, 2 Employee Rights and Employment Policy Journal 241 (1998). In addition, McCann is a noted speaker on the aging work force. She has lectured on age discrimination, downsizing, and employee benefit issues at the Second World Assembly on Aging as well as conferences sponsored by the American Bar Association, the National Employment Lawyers Association, and the District of Columbia Bar Association. Due to her expertise in employment discrimination law, she is widely quoted in the media. Ms. McCann graduated with high honors, Phi Beta Kappa from the College of William and Mary in Virginia in 1984 and received her Master of Science in Gerontology (with emphases in industrial gerontology and public policy) from the Ethel Percy Andrus Gerontology Center at the University of Southern California in1986. She graduated cum laude from Georgetown University Law Center in May 1992.

Thomas Osborne, Senior Attorney

Thomas Osborne, a retired Navy JAG Corps officer, is an experienced trial and appellate litigator of both civil and criminal cases. In the Navy, he participated in all phases of court-martial practice, from trial to argument before the United States Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces in his capacity as Chief Government Appeals Counsel. As a trial attorney in the Torts Branch of the Civil Division of the U.S. Department of Justice and later in the Civil Division of the District of Columbia Office of Corporation Counsel, he tried a wide variety of cases in courts throughout the country as well as arguing appeals. Since joining the AARP Work Force Programs Department in 1992, which became part of AARP Foundation Litigation upon its founding in 1996, Mr. Osborne has concentrated on age discrimination in employment and retiree benefits and has represented plaintiffs in trials and appeals of cases involving such claims. He has also written and filed on behalf of AARP many friend-of-the-court briefs on employment issues in state and federal courts including the U.S. Supreme Court. Mr. Osborne received his J.D. from the University of Maryland School of Law and his undergraduate degree from Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland.
