Current, Ex-Workers Suing 3M For Age Bias

Published: December 24, 2004

Summary: Current and former 3M employees are suing the company on charges that it discriminated against them because they were over 45 years old. The complaint charges that 3M has discriminated against older employees in performance appraisals, training, promotions and pay. 3M states it will “vigorously defend against the lawsuit.” The workers are seeking injunctive relief and damages that could total “multiple millions of dollars.” One of the targets of the lawsuit is 3M’s selection of few people over the age of 45 for “Six Sigma” training. Sprenger & Lang partner Susan Coler said “We believe that 3M uses this training to give younger employees a huge advantage in their careers over older peers.”
